Gravity, Human Movement and Parkinson’s Disease

Innate human coordination requires being in sync with the STRAIGHT-down influence of gravity. This enables us to tap the substantial energy generated by the downward movement of our body mass. In infancy, we all learn this highly evolved skill as we teach ourselves to sit, stand and walk with grace and power. Early in childhood, however, through deep cultural conditioning, we forget. From the day we are born, we see everyone around us sitting back in chairs, sofas, car seats, etc. At around 3 or 4, we get sucked into this utterly normal, but mal-adaptive behavior. We begin sitting-back with staggering repetition. In so doing, we interfere with gravity’s influence by sending our body mass down on a BACKWARDS trajectory. Our brains automatically react — with muscular strain and skeletal distortion — to keep our head/neck functionally vertical. We don’t notice these reactions nor feel anything unusual. It all happens subconsciously. This kinesthetic disconnect spills over into how we stand and walk. The consequences are all around us: society-wide epidemics of bad posture, lower back and neck pain, knee and hip replacements. For people with Parkinsons, the consequences are even more severe, restricting free movement considerably. This can be changed — through re-developing sensitivity to our downward-moving body mass and how it is affecting us moment-by-moment. If you are planning to listen, it will be worth your while to check-out in advance an illustrated essay on this topic at www.uprighting.com/Parkinsons.pdf.

Positive Deviants in Parkinson’s Disease: What do Non-Progressors have in Common

My guest today is Dr. Laurie Mischley ND who will be discussing her exciting research program and discoveries as they pertain to Parkinson’s disease. The focus of her work is on describing conditionally essential nutrients in Parkinson’s disease (PD), attempting to describe the nutritional status and requirements unique to individuals with neurodegenerative diseases. She has published on coenzyme Q10 deficiency in PD, completed her master’s thesis on lithium deficiency in PD, and is currently completing her doctoral dissertation on glutathione in PD. In 2013, she and her team completed a “Phase I Safety & Tolerability Study of Intranasal Glutathione in PD.”

Dr. Mischley is a clinical research assistant professor at Bastyr University, where she is principal investigator of other PD studies including, “CAM Care in PD” and “Cannabis in PD Tremor.”

Mindfulness, Meditation and Parkinson’s Disease

My guest is Bob Stahl, Ph.D. who answers the question “What is mindfulness?” and discusses how mindfulness would help people live  fulfilling lives with Parkinson’s. As explained on his website [www.mindfulnessprograms.com]:

“Mindfulness is the practice of being aware of what’s happening in the present moment. Whenever you bring awareness to what you’re directly doing or experiencing in your body and mind, you’re being mindful.”

Dr. Stahl founded 7 Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction programs in medical centers throughout the San Francisco bay Area and currently directs programs at Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz, El Camino Hospital in Mountain View and Los Gatos. He serves as a Senior Teacher for the Oasis Institute for Mindfulness-based Professional Education and Training. Dr. Stahl is a co-author of “A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Workbook”, “Calming the Rush of Panic” “A Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Workbook for Anxiety”, “Living with Your Heart Wide Open” and other marvelous books.

How to Determine the Cause of Your Symptoms All By Yourself

Most people choose at the beginning to suppress their Parkinson’s symptoms. Consider another choice: Discover the cause first before you configure a treatment program. Further, most people believe the only way to determine what is wrong with them is to pay medical professionals to order expensive and often times invasive tests that can involve risks in themselves. This option is a valuable resource to be sure. The good news of the day is that there are a variety of methods you can use to determine the cause of your symptoms since the body is always giving us all the information we need (and more).  No medical professional need be consulted, compensated of involved. How cool is that?

A wide variety of conditions and factors are known to cause the symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease. What is the primary cause in your case? Once a cause has been found, resources can focus on getting the treatments that can heal the cause. This is far more efficient and (I might add) far more interesting than suppressing symptoms for the rest of your life.

Most people believe that the cause can only be detected by a trained professional who must analyze results of expensive and invasive laboratory tests. Admittedly, this is the preferred approach for most people. There is another way.

Instead of assuming someone else has the expertise to figure out what is causing your symptoms, why not put your own detective hat on? It is possible to figure out what is causing your symptoms yourself.

How? The body gives us all the information we need to find the cause. The physical origin of the presenting symptom initially is a key clue in the discovery of the cause (or causes). Important information is also found by examining your feet, eyes, hair and saliva.

It is always a good idea to get a trained professional involved in your journey down the road to recovery, but why not put yourself in the driver’s seat? Figure out the likely source of symptoms yourself. In so doing, you take control over your own recovery program.

This radio show proposes a variety of methods and approaches that will give important clues as to the cause of symptoms. Some cost a few dollars. Others are free.

Tension Release Exercises (TRE)

My guest today is Dr. David Berceli, PhD, creator of TRE® (Tension, Stress & Trauma Release Exercise) which is an innovative series of exercises that assist the body in releasing deep muscular patterns of stress, tension and trauma. TRE® safely activates a natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating that releases muscular tension, calming down the nervous system. When this muscular shaking/vibrating mechanism is activated in a safe and controlled environment, the body is encouraged to return back to a state of balance.

Dr. Berceli has developed a marvelous Online TRE Webinar Course which offers a step by step explanation of  TRE® so you can get started right now with releasing trauma and reducing stress.

Dr. Berceli explains the potential therapeutic value of tremors in this Youtube video and is the author of Shake it Off Naturally.

This Youtube video is a testimonial of a man diagnosed with Essential Tremors who found TRE helpful.

How to Create New Neural Pathways

Doing the same things the same way day in and day out dig deep ruts into the same, tired neural pathways. Our neurons get rutted and cluttered with debris. Symptoms flare.

What can be done? Existing neurological pathways can be cleared and cleansed or we can create new pathways. Either approach reduces or eliminates symptoms.

The most expedient approach is to pave new pathways which means our habits have to be transformed. How can this be accomplished? Answering this question has been the focus of my research over the past year. Two opportunities are available to explore the possibilities.

First, natural methods to create new neural pathways can be explored which is the focus of my Udemy Jump Start to Recovery online course.

Second, I discuss a variety of exciting methods for creating new neural pathways during this radio show. All of my suggestions embrace natural approaches.
